Discovering the Caribbean Community of Puerto Aventuras, Mexico

The Caribbean beach town of Puerto Aventuras offers easy living in Mexico’s Riviera Maya and lies just south of Playa del Carmen, just north of the real estate boom already happening in Tulum and less than an hour and a half south of the Cancun International Airport. According to Fodor’s, the 900-acre gated community of Puerto Aventuras is very expat-friendly and has a fabulous beach.

“Although the marina is the main focus here, Puerto Aventuras’ beaches are naturally stunning and seldom crowded,” wrote Fodor’s. “Beachcombers, campers and snorkeling snowbirds love Paamul (pronounced pah-mool), a crescent-shaped lagoon 13 miles south of Playa del Carmen with clear, placid waters sheltered by a coral reef.”

Here, the beach often yields treasures like shells, sand dollars and even glass beads – some that undoubtedly come from the sunken 18th-century Spanish galleon that lies just offshore from the nearby town of Akumal – which is part of what makes living in Puerto Aventuras full or part time so magical. The other beach – Fatima Bay – is often referred to as simply “Omni Beach” because it stretches about two miles from the front of the Omni hotel. The waters here are shallow and calm, making them especially kid-friendly, especially if you stay inside the breakwater.

“Further out the temperature drops, making for a refreshing swim,” wrote Fodor’s. “To the north is a smaller bay, known as Chan Yu Yum.”

In addition to having some of the best beaches in the world, Puerto Aventuras is often ranked as one of the most family-friendly places in Mexico. Living in Puerto Aventuras offers fewer crowds than Cancun and Playa del Carmen and the area is also home to a first-rate golf course.

“Visitors here come for the large marina, golf course, and of course, the white-sand beaches where activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, swimming with the dolphins, and fishing are all popular pastimes,” wrote Oyster.com. “In addition to families, plenty of couples looking for a relaxing location come to the area, as there are several adults-only resorts.”

The main hub of real estate in Puerto Aventuras is centered around the large marina, which is also home to several restaurants and shops. And since the Caribbean Sea here is home to the world’s second largest barrier reef, living in Puerto Aventuras is especially prime for scuba diving and snorkeling. Although only experienced divers should venture into the Riviera Maya’s many underwater caverns, there are plenty of areas ideal for novice divers as well in the three bays of Puerto Aventuras.

“Puerto Aventuras includes villas, condos, hotels and a marina and golf course and is modern, clean and well-maintained,” wrote USA Today. “Puerto Aventuras is considered the center for sport fishing in the Riviera Maya.”

Living in Puerto Aventuras is also ideal for expats who are interested in retirement in Mexico, because there are many foreigners living in the area either full or part time. The town itself is safe and is also home to the only maritime museum in the area. Visitors and residents alike get to enjoy a small town feel while living in Puerto Aventuras, which also offers a wide variety of real estate investment options.
