When people nearing retirement age think about living in the Caribbean, many of them still believe a safe place with welcoming residency requirements, affordable health care and real estate, modern infrastructure and easy access to friends and family back home just doesn’t exist, but the truth is it does… In Isla Mujeres, Mexico!

Situated just off the coast from Cancun but a world apart from the nonstop buzz of that city’s infamous Hotel Zone, Isla Mujeres is definitely one of the Mexican Caribbean’s crown jewels. And for anyone close to retirement age (or beyond it), Isla Mujeres also offers a unique opportunity to make a long-term real estate investment in one of the world’s best countries for expats, a place that is already known for having the best beaches in the world.

But don’t just take our word for it… International Living, which has been one of the world’s leading authorities in moving overseas and buying real estate abroad for nearly four decades, just named Isla Mujeres one of the ‘Top 5 Caribbean Islands for Affordable Retirement,” a distinction that is not shared by high-dollar locales like St. Thomas and Grand Bahama Island.

“Before Cancun existed, Mexicans and a few adventurous foreigners went to Isla Mujeres for some of the best beaches and watersports in the world,” wrote International Living. “Diving for coral, swimming with dolphins and sailing on a crystal blue sea.”

The ferry ride from Isla Mujeres to downtown Cancun is just 20 minutes, yet many tourists never opt to make the journey – which is a stunning experience in itself, by the way – so Isla Mujeres is definitely not a tourist haven. There are no monstrous resorts and hotels lining the beaches, although there are places to stay, and did we mention Isla is home to some of the best beaches in the world?

“A couple can live a very nice life on Isla Mujeres for around $2,500 a month, including rent,” wrote International Living. “Rents can range from $900 to $1,500 for one or two-bedroom apartments and groceries for a couple typically total around $600 a month.”

Of course, beach condos and other real estate investments– both in Isla Mujeres and if you were to venture south into other parts of Mexico’s adjacent Riviera Maya – always offer more long-term opportunities for buyers of all ages. At about five miles long and just a half-mile wide, Isla Mujeres is also small enough to have its own sense of community. Golf carts are the ideal method of transportation and high quality medical is available at the island’s own Navy hospital and medical clinic.

“Jim and Daisy married in 2008 and moved to Isla Mujeres in 2012,” wrote International Living. “The couple owns an established diving business called Aqua Adventures. They spend their days taking clients out to enjoy the fantastic scuba diving to be found offshore.”

In addition to being a great diving and snorkeling destination, Isla Mujeres is home to a variety of diverse dining options – from fish tacos to expensive fine dining – there is something for everyone. Of course, as much as the laid-back lifestyle in Isla Mujeres is appealing, the island’s close proximity to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel – to name only a few of the many beach and colonial enclaves found in the region – is another one of its major draws for expats.
