DreamWorks announced a couple of years ago they were looking at Mexico as a possible new home for one of their parks, but there has not been much news about it until June of last year when the Riviera Maya was named as the chosen destination for the new DreawWorks theme park and for the major real estate investment a project of this magnitude demands.
The Riviera-Maya News reported yesterday that permits for the park are currently in the application process to push the HUGE project forward. It will include three hotels, a shopping plaza, a Museum of Anthropology and TWO them parks – a Dreampark and the Amikop Thrillpark, which will occupy more than 1.1 million square meters as revealed in approved applications for a change of land use.
“The park is expected to be built on 7.5 hectares of land in the Punta Maroma area, with construction beginning next year,” wrote TravelPulse. “The amusement park is expected to feature rides, theaters, restaurants and retail shops.”
The DreamWorks theme park will be located just north of downtown Playa del Carmen and south from Cancun. The development is expected to create upwards of 2,000 jobs and will draw 4.5 million visitors each year upon completion. According to reports, the project is projected to cost around $800M USD, including a massive real estate investment.
Real estate investment dollars continue to flow into Mexico’s Riviera Maya from around the globe, in part because the area offers such a high standard of living and vacationing for such an affordable price. In fact, the entire Riviera Maya region has not slowed its growth over the 12 years I’ve been involved and has no signs of slowing down any time soon.
I just had a client tell me yesterday, “I don’t want to spend my whole life on the sidelines.” Knowing the growth will continue and that he can afford it today, I’m confident this news will make him feel even more secure in his decision to purchase a vacation home in Tulum, which lies just south of Playa del Carmen. I know he’s already excited about the opportunity to earn 8-14% return on investment (ROI) and is looking forward to spending even more time down here in the next 7-10 years… Except I think he’ll be down here living full time much sooner than that!
